Cowrie falls are an updated version of feathered roach clips*.
* Which I loved as a kid, and didn't realize what I was really wearing in my hair until I was a bit older, though I'm sure my mom got a good laugh out of it.

I had one that was black, pink and purple. I wore it with my purposely ripped-to-make-fringe-edges yellow t-shirt with the David Lee Roth sparkle decal on the front (that I picked out at the t-shirt shop that I know realize was a head shop too).
PS: I was thinking about your Valentine's post. You should look up "Trixie Little" and "Total Eclipse of the Heart" on YouTube. Very fun burlesque by friends of mine (there are several versions, make sure to catch one that shows it from the beginning). NSFW!
